THE STUDENT AND THE TEACHER

This question was POSITED on facebook couple of days ago…

HOW DID YOU FEEL? WHEN YOU DISCOVER THAT THAT PERSON YOU HATED YEARS AGO HAS ALWAYS BEEN YOUR FRIEND?

The comments and likes it generated made me dig in into the reason behind the question in the first place.

I think it is important and necessary for all learning facilitators, parents and most importantly you to PAUSE and take a look at this.

I dropped this question because of some subtle attitude I have noticed which students manifest especially in relation to their teachers.

It is very difficult for some students some of the time to appreciate what he/she is doing. The situation worsens when the teacher is hell bent on setting the student on the right part.

Some of them tend to see their teachers as trouble mongers who have been paid by God knows who to keep them perpetually in misery.

Some believe that their teacher never for once loved them. His constant assignments, corrections, ‘underscoring’ them (even when they deserved it) are evidence they muster to back themselves up.

However, after they have parted company with such teachers and moved on in life, they start to realize how helpful such 'disturbance' have been. Some would wish they could recreate such time and have proper mentoring at the hands of such a 'cruel teacher' In issues of this kind, part 2 don't usually exist.

I have come to realize that students at this juncture develop intense liking for such teachers. They reminisce those good old days when such a teacher laid into them.

And if perchance they run into him or her by the wayside, they take out time to greet the teacher in question. They years of acrimony are somehow carried away on wings of time.

The summary of this simple question I dropped can be emphasized in these words. Knowledge grows. What we consider correct today especially from our limited exposure will change with time and as we gather experience.

On account of this I recommend a simple solution/habit which I want all students to adopt - TRUST.

Trust your teacher because he/she can never mislead you. Sometimes it involves negating our own will but it all turns out for the better.

Secondly, you need someone more experienced than you to show you the path to a happy and academically successful life.

Sometimes, it is said that you are your worst enemy. Therefore it is important to have someone who really cares about you and continuously talk to you in season and out of season around the corner.

I rest my case here. You guys made put this write-up together. Thanks for your comments. Do share this piece with your friends. Let’s make our students great by preparing them for an awesome future.
